Julie & Julia

Do yourself a favour and see this wonderful film. R came along with me yesterday saying that he'd see anything if I bought him some popcorn. Well, it ended up that he enjoyed more than the popcorn so don't hesitate to take the man in your life along. Meryl Streep is absolutely wonderful as Julia Child and don't be surprised to see an Oscar nomination come her way. I can also see a Fall season of Child's cookbooks flying off of the shelves, you can't help but be tempted to get your saucepans out of the cupboards after watching this movie. There was a funny moment when Julie's friends mention that she should set up a Pay-Pal account on her blog to help defray the cost of cooking so many recipes. R leaned over and asked "Can you get that on your blog?". "For what?" I replied. "All those books that you're buying" was the comeback. Very funny coming from the gentleman who talked me into buying two books from the bookshop only an hour before. That man does like to tease. In conclusion, two very enthusiastic thumbs up for this feast of a film. I'd see it again in the time it takes to say "butter".

  1. That film hasn't come out here yet but I'll be interested to see it. I like the idea of a button on one's blog to defray its costs!
Which 2 books did you buy?

  2. I intend to see this at some point after it's released here; the book was light and fun and delectable!

If we each paid for one another's book buying via paypal donations, do you think we would feel less guilty splurging on new books? We would experience the same "fix"? It's an addiction...

  3. Oh I'm so envious you've seen it! Waiting here until September is torture. And yes, I could probably use one of those buttons, too! K x

  4. I'll see if I can convince my husband to take me this weekend! I won a copy of the book from Frances at Nonsuch Book a few days ago, so I'm looking forward to that, too.

  5. verity, The Meaning of Night and Glass of Time by Micheal Cox. Those two have been calling to me for ages now and since I'm on a staycation R convinced me to treat myself.

Paperback Reader, If we thought of it as giving gifts instead of self-indulgence then perhaps yes, we should pay for each other's books!

Kristina, Start counting down the days, you're going to love it!

JoAnn, Congratulations on the book win, was it the actual Julie & Julia novel? Now I'm tempted to read Julia's book, My Life in France. Hope you get to the movie.

  6. Just read over on Bookish NYC how good this is and am now determined to watch it when it eventually arrives in UK cinemas. A film about food followed by a nice dinner out sounds like a very good plan to me!

One of those buttons would instantly remove all guilt from book buying...what a wonderful idea! This has to be arranged in some way!

  7. Rachel, While out on a day trip yesterday I must have said ten times how much I enjoyed the movie, hope you enjoy it too. So you suffer from book purchase guilt as well...join the club.

  8. I think I could have had the whole movie follow Streep as Child. She was perfect. I will be surprised too if she isn't nominated for an Oscar.

  9. I loved the book and can't wait to see the film.

For those of you who ever make it here to Washington, DC, you will be happy to know that Julia's entire kitchen was relocated from her home in Cambridge, MA to the American History Museum at the Smithsonian. It is a wonderful exhibit. One of my favorite things in DC.

And by the way, if any of you do come to DC to see Julia's kitchen or anything else, drop me a line.

  10. Thomas, You'll see Julia's kitchen set up in the Smithsonian in the movie. That would really be something to see up close though.

  12. You're the third person to give this the thumbs up. I never get to the movie theater these days (unless I want to go alone...my husband is not into movies), so I will watch for the video!
