Picking a Persephone

Have you been planning for the Persephone Reading Week Challenge coming up on August 24? Some of you may be waiting to see what sort of mood you'll be in, will it be romantic, nostalgic, domestic, comedic or whimsical. The best news is there's a Persephone book for all of these situations and more. My selection has been narrowed down to A London Child of the 1870's, Mariana, A House in the Country, Miss Buncle's Book and Greenery Street. In somewhat related news, I've submitted a 'Persephone Missing in Action' report with The Book Depository for Minnie's Room, it left their premises on August 3, that much has been confirmed but so far, nothing at my end. Patience is a virtue, right? In the meantime, my Persephone grey T-shirt/reading uniform is clean and ready for service (I have several, no worries). Are you ready? This reading event is being brought to you by Verity and Claire.

  1. Hmm. I was all set to read Saplings (must finish Princes of the Land first, though...good it's short), but after seeing your books there I think I might need to take another look at my unread pile of Persephones. I hope your book shows up! I've yet to lose anything outright that's come from the UK, but sometimes things can arrive very slowly.

  2. Danielle, Usually, just at the point where you start thinking it's hopeless, the book does turn up. It's going to be a fun week of Persephone and I'm really looking forward to reading everyone's reviews. Stay tuned...

  3. Aww, we'll be away that week and I'm going to miss the big event! I'll have to catch up when we get back home..

  4. JoAnn, there will be lots to catch up on and I'm sure you'll still benefit from reading our reviews :).

Darlene, how timely! I've just finished creating a post for that week and I am attempting to finalise my own reading.

How unfortunate about Minnie's Room :(.

  5. JoAnn, You'll be missed, have a terrific time away!

Paperback Reader, I wouldn't want anyone to be in the middle of a book come the 24th, it's time to prepare! TBD says to hold out until the 18th, fingers crossed it will show up. I like to think it's on a North American tour:)

  6. I'm not ready, I'm not ready! I was going to try and do one a day, but that's probably hugely over-ambitious. I know it will involve some short story collections...

  7. I love that you are going to be completely color coordinated for the event...and good to know you won't be wearing the same one all week:) I think I will be waiting to see what my mood is. I have wanted to read Greenery Street for a while but if I chose today I would want to read On the Other Side. Patience is a virtue but I think I would have an undercurrent of panic going. Hope it arrives soon.

  9. I'd never thought of my gray tees as being part of a reading uniform! Perhaps an excuse to buy even more gray tees? K x

  10. StuckInABook, Too funny! There's still time but don't go starting War and Peace or anything like that:) Anything you manage to get read will suffice, you have to love a 'no pressure' challenge.

Book Psmith, Greenery Street does sound lovely doesn't it. I had a book that was a tad late before and TBD said "wait until Thursday" and you know what, it arrived on Thursday. Let's hope!

verity, You're very welcome! Which Persephone are you reading?

Kristina, Most gray things now remind me of Persephone, should Crayola know about this? Oh yes, definitely more gray tees! D x

  11. I'll be on holiday in Bath but will be taking 'The Closed Door and Other Stories' with me. I'm in the mood for a bit of Dorothy Whipple for my next Persephone.

  12. Murphy's Law--The moment you send off an email enquiring about your missing book it is bound to show up in the mail the day after. So maybe you'll get a nice white package in your mail box tomorrow stamped with a 'Royal Mail' stamp!

  15. I'm going to go non-fiction and read A Very Great Profession by the great Persephone Founder herself! In fact am half way through (have been for a while), but will finish it off next week in honour of Persephone week.

  18. Wow, there are some fast readers out there! I own only two P books I haven't read yet, and I wonder if I can get both of them done in a week. :<) Mine are The Fortnight in September and Cheerful Weather for the Wedding.
