Apple Crisp in Autumn

Autumn and apples make a perfect pairing. The temperature here has dipped to single digits in the morning and evening so a warming dish of apple crisp was on the menu last night.
Well, that and the fact that Verity has never heard of apple crisp and I wanted to be able to show her what it's like. The recipe calls for tart apples, brown sugar, oats, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and flour. I sprinkled some pecans on top this time and loved the added nutty flavour. Served up warm with a scoop of ice cream it makes the perfect dessert on a chilly evening.

  1. Oh wow, that looks delicious. I love Apple Crisp. Especially when still warm from the oven and w/vanilla ice cream of course. I love to bake and cook, but I have never actually made apple crisp.

  2. I made apple crisp last week ...first of the season. It was Nan's recipe, but I love the sound of oats and pecans! May have to post my picture for Verity, too.

  3. Look delicious but I'm not sure what apple crisp is either...is it like a crumble?!

  4. Thomas, Well, I'd say that this weekend would be a perfect opportunity to get your oven mitts on!

JoAnn, Definitely try adding pecans, or walnuts, to your next apple crisp! 'First of the season'...we both know there will be a few more.

Rachel, Just had a peek at the ingredients in an apple crumble and it's safe to say they're quite similiar. Can't wait for the leftovers tonight!

  5. That looks gorgeous - I really must make that. You are so kind to make it for me to see. Maybe I'll get time over the wekend.

I did some further research, and essentially it is the equivalent of an English crumble, however, a crumble wouldn't necessarily have oats in it.

    You're a star!

  7. Darlene, I discovered your blog a few weeks ago and really enjoy it! I especially enjoyed reading about your trip to London in May. I am taking my 5th trip there in a few weeks (I was last there in 2005), and am already worrying about not having enough time! (I'll be there 10 days) Persephone bookshop is definitely on my list! Thank you for your blog.

  8. Oh yum! I am not even a big fan of apples but this dish just seems too perfect for this time of year. I thought of you today when my mom emailed me about all the layers she is wearing right now. She is spending a few days in Quebec before taking an east coast cruise. I'll tell her to keep an eye out for apple crisp:)

  9. verity, I will have to look in my new cookbook for a crumble recipe so I can taste the difference for myself. R was a most willing accomplice when I mentioned the apple crisp last night!

claire, Haha! It seems to be a very popular dessert lately!

Lisa B, Thanks for stopping by! I'm thrilled that you discovered my London travels, I really enjoyed blogging about them. Once you get back from your trip I'd love to hear all about it!

  10. Book Psmith, How lovely for your Mum! I'm hoping that things warm up as we're only half of what the average temperature is for this time of year. A gorgeous Indian Summer would be just the thing for your Mum's cruise...keeping my fingers crossed!

  12. G keeps asking for a 'hot pudding' for dessert. I better not show him your post, or he'll really be clamoring for one, and no time this weekend! K x

  14. Brr--we've not had a cold night like that yet--just barely above freezing a couple of times (which is fine with me as I'm not ready for it yet). I love apples and your apple crisp looks yummy (especially with ice cream). I got my Honeycrisps by the way yesterday--dragged myself to the store, but it will be worth it this week when I can take them in my lunch to work!
