Book Porn

Thanks to Persephone Books and my favourite book bloggers I desperately needed a new bookcase.

It hasn't been easy finding one which would work as furniture and not cost a fortune.

Last weekend we found just what we were looking for and better still, it was half-price due to a few teensy marks that I will cover with a furniture pencil.

Flinging off my coat and scarf I got down to work bringing armloads of books from my crowded shelves in our spare room.  R left the house, I barely noticed.

I emailed a photo to The Heiress introducing the newest member of our family.  Yes, I was that excited.

 Anyone need a cigarette?

  1. Very handsome bookcase, Darlene! But isn't it funny, however many new shelves one acquires, they're instantly filled up ... and you're back to double-parking!

  2. Don't your Persephone's look lovely. You must nearly have the whole set.

  3. ooOoh that was book porn! Gorgeous bookcase Darlene - I know what you mean about finding something that does the job but also looks good. You've done a fantastic job on the arranging - such beautiful books and lovely floral arrangements too!

  4. Very lovely, Darlene! I love how thick the shelves are - a solidly-built bookcase well able to handle anything you might load it with! Your row of Persephones looks particularly alluring.

  5. I have the lovely Everyman Christmas Stories which I bought solely for the dustjacket design. I didn't know there was a similar Ghost Stories.

  6. Oh it's beautiful Darlene! I love the detail and the finish. And I saw some Dickens peeking out and was wondering is the print in those editions small or good-sized?

  7. mary, Too true! Barry Humphries was interviewed on a Guardian books podcast, it was hilarious. He has over 25,000 books and needs to have the floor stabilized with a steel beam. He says that the addition of a small pamphlet will be all it takes to have the room collapse into the floor below!

    Vivienne, Haha....that is the plan!

bookssnob, Well thank you! We shall see how long it takes for the floral things to be shoved aside for more books. You're one of my top trouble makers!

Claire, Nicola knew what she was doing when she chose those gorgeous grey covers didn't she!

Thomas, Oh my goodness gracious, Thomas, where have you been? There are also editions of Detective Stories, Love Stories, New York Stories and Dog Stories! Off you go for a peek...

Stacy, They were a great deal at $2 each at a clearance sale...the print is smallish but absolutely bearable. They're quite cute!

  8. Seriously lovely shelves! And there is even room for growth--looks like you've space on a number of those shelves, which is of course very important (even if you want to read from your own piles this year...). And I see you're reading Mollie Panter-Downes--yay--that's one of my favorite books! Enjoy all your bookish goodies (well, shelves are sort of big, but you know what I mean)!

  9. Mystica, Hope things have warmed up in Sri Lanka! And thank you!

Danielle, I had the best Saturday morning...reading in bed with a pot of tea on a tray, bliss. And yes, room for growth on the shelves, it's all part of my plan *rubs hands together*.

  10. Lovely lovely lovely. While I appreciate my very useful Billy bookshelves, there is an elegance to yours that Billy can't compete with.

  13. Oh my goodness... the Persephones! Hoping to add more to my collection next month. And like Thomas, I noticed the Christmas Stories book (which is on my shelf, too)... but Ghost Stories and more?? A book splurge is coming soon.

  14. Lovely photos. Did everyone else do what I did & click on them so I could read the titles? Enjoy filling them up.

  15. Vintage Reading, Oh thank you, I have a deep affection for my collection and what Nicola has accomplished in publishing these fabulous stories. I don't even want to think about never knowing a Dorothy Whipple story!

JoAnn, The Pocket Classics are fabulous aren't they and with the whole collection there is something for every mood. Love Stories would be perfect for Valentine's Day coming soon!

lyn, I bet they did! I know that I sure do when others post shots of their shelves or tbr stacks. Enjoy your day!
