It's Not Over Yet!

There is nothing like a week of Virago show-and-tell to stir up the urge for a good rummage around a second-hand bookshop.  Not wanting to venture very far due to some light snowfall I stopped in at a shop not too far away...it is usually quite a tip.  I was pleasantly surprised to find it under new management and very neat and tidy, meaning there was a path to walk through and no books teetering high up on shelves.

I found a copy of Monica Dickens, One Pair of Hands, which is brilliant and a VMC that is new to me.  Has anyone read The Loved and Envied or anything else by Enid Bagnold?

  1. That's the spirit, Darlene, I'm glad to see you're still going strong for the weekend. :) And glad you found a new Virago (I found one too, just the other day and was quite pleased.) I see you've found a review of it, there was also a review yesterday of another of Enid Bagnold's books, The Squire, here.

  2. I have read a few Enid Bagnolds and very much like her writing. The Squire is brilliant, and The Loved and Envied is quite different, and not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was excellent. Sadly I read it pre-blogging so don't have a review but others have reviewed it for the Reading Week! Lucky you finding a Virago just like that - gorgeous cover too. The Gods were aligning for you and Virago Reading Week!

  3. I've read it; it was probably my least favourite of he Bagnolds. My favourite is her wartime book - The happy foreigner.

  5. I've never heard of Bagnold before - these Viragos are so diverse, aren't they! So many authors I've never heard of. I quite like the cover and hope you enjoy it. The Dickens sounds good too.

  6. Funny, I came across her name just the other day when I was reorganising all my bookshelves (due to major carpet laying event) and picked up National Velvet which I hadn't even realised I owned. It's the only book of hers I've read or heard of, but now I'm likely to go searching for more.

bookssnob, As a woman in my later forties this book may read differently for me so I'm really looking forward to it!

verity, I wonder if this book will read differently to me as I'm in my late forties...hmmm.

Mystica, We are nothing but trouble!

Rochester Reader, I have learned so much about many different authors this past week! And my purse is a little lighter as well.

Susan, Funny how names pop up like that once you've been exposed. Hope you like your new carpeting!

Joan, Lady Diana Cooper...stunning isn't she!
