I confess to getting a head start yesterday and dove into the title story of Dorothy Whipple's, The Closed Door and Other Stories. Am I the only one who has begun to hear choral music when I say 'Dorothy Whipple'? I digress.
No. 74 in Persephone's catalogue, this slim volume of short stories is my choice for the weekend and I've been looking forward to it since it arrived several months ago. At just page 32, Whipple already has me wanting to weep for one character and whip another!
Which title have you chosen?
I LOVED those stories, Darlene. The title story is particularly good, and incredibly frustrating, if I remember rightly!
ReplyDeleteI have cheated and already read my title as I knew I wouldn't have time to read a thing this weekend - To Bed with Grand Music! I loved it! And can't wait to discuss it...
Me, too (couldn't wait). I'm reading and loving Agnes Jekyll's Kitchen Essays from the 1920s, and I have the Carlyles at Home and Cheerful Weather for the Wedding on tap for the actual PRW.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Daddy's Gone A-Hunting but I don't think I'll finish it over the weekend. I'll read along in spirit and write about it later.
ReplyDeleteI started early too... but that's because I'm going to be so busy hosting that I fear I won't fit in as much reading as I'd like.
ReplyDeleteLovely photograph! Looking forward to your thoughts as Thomas gave me The Closed Door and Other Stories as part of my Persephone Secret Santa gift.
I've started with 'Cheerful Weather for the Wedding' and hope to get in 'High Wages'. I love your photograph!
ReplyDeleteI love Whipple, too. I'm not participating in the weekend, though, just manic with half-term, work etc. Excuses I know, but I'll be reading all your reviews.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the Persephone Reading Weekend but will follow along now with my own copy of The Closed Door!

Dorothy Whipple is one of my favorites...I even found an old copy of Because of the Lockwoods--not a Persephone (yet) but the others got me hooked!! This weekend I am reading Holtby's The Crowded Street.
ReplyDeleteI am reading The Home-Maker. And made a good head start and really enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this collection Darlene! I've cheated and am not really reviewing at all, but am really looking forward to yours! The weeping AND whipping bit I so identify with DW!
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear what you think of those stories, Darlene. I've just begun The Fortnight in September and so far, really nice and cozy.
ReplyDeleteI am planning to start my Persephone edition of "Cheerful Weather for the Wedding" by Julia Strachey. Love my Persephone books! They are so beautiful..
ReplyDeleteMiss Buncle arrived this morning ... now I shall join in the read-along!

I just read my first Whipple and I loved it so much. I have very happily discovered that many more of her titles are published as Persephones. Hope you enjoy these :)
