Bound for Kent

The acceptance has been sent, the airline tickets have been purchased and I've booked a B&B in London for this September.  But this isn't about me, The Heiress will be studying Criminology at the University of Kent in Canterbury!

Ever since a mother/daughter trip to London when she was sixteen, The Heiress has dreamt of studying overseas.  Her love affair with England began as a toddler, cuddled up on the sofa with me watching Jane Austen films.  When she was 6 years-old I had to do her hair just the way Emma Thompson wore hers as Elinor in Sense and Sensibility.  The interest in criminology began while taking classes in deviance during her Sociology degree and the very mention of such things as terrorism or youth violence make her eyes light up.  Where The Heiress will end up is anyone's guess but the journey is sure to be an interesting and hopefully, fulfilling one.

So in September, we will fly to London for a couple of days and then board a train for Canterbury.  Once she's settled and my bank account has been nearly wiped out at the university bookshop I'll return to London to see some sights.  A visit to Cath Kidston for a cheery new bag with a new Persephone title tucked inside should console me during the lonely flight back home.

  1. Oh how lovely, I'm sure she will have a wonderful experience. I'll be following you about 3 years from now -- my daughter is just beginning university this autumn but plans to study in England during her third year. She's had a similar love affair with the country.

And I hope you enjoy your little shopping spree in London!

  2. Oh how wonderful and exciting! I studied in England (in East Sussex) during the third year of my undergraduate degree and it was such a wonderful experience. And how lovely for you to now have such a perfect excuse to pop over to England for a visit!

  5. I am hopping with excitement for the Heiress! If I ever end up living outside of London it will be in the Canterbury area - I love it!

  8. Laura, Another lucky young lady! A word of advice to your daughter would be to set some money aside for her time over there. My daughter wishes she hadn't spent so much on things that didn't matter. So she could spend it on things that don't matter while in England!

thecaptivereader, You must have so many wonderful memories and great stories to tell! I've been dying to get back to London but held off as I knew this was part of her plan. I can't wait!

Esme, I wish that it were me but The Heiress has promised weekly reports so I can live vicariously.

Joan, Oh thank you! Book Snob has done an amazing job of tempting me with tidbits of things to discover in Kent as well. I would really appreciate any information you can think of! And my daughter squealed with delight when I told her the news about the CK shop. An added incentive to find employment as soon as she can once she's settled!

bookssnob, R has been on Google street maps checking out Canterbury, he loves it too! Something tells me that we are in for some laughs, Rachel...I can't wait either!

Cristina, The Heiress absolutely beamed when she read your comment. I think she would leave right now if she could!

mary, Beach huts and seafood! This really is too much...I should have booked a one-way ticket for myself. Thank you so much for the links!

  12. verity, Exciting and so distracting! How you manage to read, blog, plan a wedding, renovate a house and work full-time I'll never know. And I would love to meet you so once you get back from Austria we'll make some plans. Is Simon still in Oxford as well?

Kristina, She is so thrilled by everyone's comments and best wishes! See you in September!

  13. Cornflower, I'll be sure to show her your comment, thank you so much for your kindness! This will be my fourth trip over since 2005 so I will try my best not to cram too much into each day. One of the things on my 'to do' list is to indulge in my first pasty! Not very feminine is it.

  14. There's a pasty stand on Victoria station, Darlene - right by the platform where you'll take the train to Canterbury!
Though not really up to Cornish standards!

  15. oh wow. I hope you have a wonderful time

  16. mary, That's the West Cornwall company right? I first spied pasties at their stand in Covent Garden and have been desperate to try one ever since! I know where I'm headed once I get there, thanks!

Vipula, We definitely will, thanks for stopping by.

  17. What a wonderful prospect, for The Heiress and for her proud mother.

Enjoy the highs, and choose ypur books wisely to help you through the lows.

I'm afraid though that London pasties aren't up to the standard of proper Cornish ones. You'll have to find your way down here one day. In the meantime I'll pull out Marika Hanbury Tenison's Cornish Cookery and send you a good recipe to try.

  18. FleurFisher, She is a very lucky young lady indeed! And yes please! to the offer of a recipe for proper Cornish pasties. If I can pull that off I will save my sterling for a delicious glass of Pimms instead.

  19. Very many congratualtions to the Heiress! What a lovely (and historical!) place to be studying in!

  20. How exciting for both of you! My oldest has just turned fourteen so I'm dreading the day she's packed off to college. But I like the idea of a mother/daughter trip to England, how tempting!

  21. Penny, Oh thank you! and yes, Canterbury fit the bill for exactly. With her commencement coming up I've thought of your post about your daughter's graduation quite often. I hope she's happy and doing well!

Karen, Just as you dread the idea of them walking home from school alone, somehow things just fall into place and everything is fine. Considering I can get lost inside a box I wondered what I was doing taking my child halfway around the world! The funny thing was...I felt right at home. My daughter really had her eyes opened about what exists just a plane ride away and after that there really was no looking back. And she didn't think 'hockey hair' was very attractive after seeing so many coiffed young men!

  22. Darlene, how sweet of you to remember! Thank you!

  23. What a grand place for your bookish delight!! Chaucer and more!! It sounds like a most auspicious beginning for The Heiress' post grad work and a marvellous city for her proud mother! We will joyfully await photos and reports on the blog in due course.

  24. Oh, Darlene, just seen your news - how exciting for your daughter, and how wonderful for us - that you will be visiting London more often! It would be lovely to have a bloggers meet-up, if you have time (and energy!)

  25. A Bookish Space, Thank you! I just shouted up your congrats to a sleepy Heiress.

Martina, The decision was all hers but I was so pleased she chose this area of England. We'll work on niggling a 'letter home' sort of post out of her, stay tuned!

StuckInABook, Well I am just as excited to meet you and some others so hopefully at least a few of us can work out a free day!

  26. I really am behind in blog reading, aren't I? I guess I replied to your post in my mind--as I saw this ages ago (or a week ago...). Yay--how exciting--the university looks really lovely and now you'll have an excuse to visit England more often! :)
